We can argue forever about whether soft drinks are pop culture. In my opinion, they are the the ultimate in pop culture: sweet, addictive, and bad for you. So, I'm going to review the "new" Pepsi, which I am drinking right now.
Pepsi Throwback is supposedly a return to the way they used to make Pepsi. It's like Coca-Cola classic, but for real this time. The biggest selling point is that it is made with natural (beet and cane) sugar, and not the dreaded (and cheaper) high-fructose corn syrup.
Can you tell? In my opinion, yes, you can. I've consumed a shit-ton of HFCS soda over the years, and to my tongue, the real sugar formula tastes less, well, syrup-y, and "cleaner". It doesn't leave so much of a film on the teeth and tongue. It just tastes more like something you're supposed to put in your body. It's a blatant marketing gimmick, no doubt (Pepsi claims that health concerns over HFCS had no impact on the creation of their Throwback line, which is obviously bullshit). but it's one that works, for this caffeine junkie, at least.
I'll keep drinking it as long as they keep making it.
(There is also a Mountain Dew Throwback, but I'm not drinking any variety of that shit, so if you're curious, seek that swill out on your own.)
